William Rees Videos: Overshoot
William Rees was trained as a population ecologist and is well known for originating the “ecological footprint” concept. In a series of you tube videos he presents perhaps the clearest and most realistic analysis of our current ecological situation. Rees provides well researched information from various fields including the hard sciences and social sciences to describe the actual biospheric reality we face and why current policies to address that reality will not work. Rees identifies our primary existential threat not as climate change, but as “overshoot.” Too many people are rapidly depleting natural resources accumulated over hundreds of millions of years at a rate over 1000 times nature can replace them. Species expand to all accessible habitats, and we have expanded beyond control. Furthermore, we believe that growth according to neoliberal economics is both necessary and good.
